In 1985, Avery was arrested and convicted of the sexual assault of Penny Beerntsen, despite having an alibi. The series also covers the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of Avery's nephew, Brendan Dassey, who was accused and convicted as an accessory to the murder, based largely on his confession under interrogation.
