About David Makes Man
“David Makes Man” is a drama series created by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney (“Moonlight”). Set in South Florida, this lyrical coming-of-age story centers on a teenage prodigy named David who lives in the projects but attends a magnet school for academically gifted youngsters. David, played by newcomer Akili McDowell, straddles two different worlds, navigating between the streets that raised him and the school that offers him a way out of poverty. His balancing act comes at an emotional price which is portrayed in this original series on OWN that delves into issues of race and identity. It features an ensemble cast that includes Alana Arenas, Phylicia Rashad and Isaiah Johnson. Dee Harris-Lawrence (“Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.”) serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside McCraney, Mike Kelley, Melissa Loy, Michael B. Jordan, and Oprah Winfrey.
Season 2 of David Makes Man, to premiere on OWN this summer, has cast 10 recurring roles, including Tony Plana (Ugly Betty) as a billionaire real estate developer who brings David an ambitious opportunity; Brittany S. Hall (Ballers) as an architect who has been dating David but loves her freedom as well; Erica Lutrell (Salvation) as Adult Marissa, a Miami-based marine biologist/activist; Zsané Jhé (Good Trouble) as Adult Shella, an entrepreneur extraordinaire; and Bobbi Baker (House of Payne) as Robin, David’s mom and Gloria’s loyal and level partner.
Season two finds David in his 30s (played by Kwame Patterson, “Snowfall,” “The Wire”), a rising businessman facing an opportunity that will change him and his community forever. The mounting pressure forces David to choose between the instincts that helped him survive or finding a new way to truly live. Production returned to Orlando, Florida and commenced filming in October 2020.
